Fashion show outfit sketches

Hey all! Sorry this isn't a 3D update, but I've just been doing lots of concept sketching over the last two weeks. Here are the updated costumes for my SUPERHERO themed fashion show (so excited!) with inspiration from different candies/desserts/treats.

This one has been going under lots of iterations. I've been struggling with colors, mostly. I've been going through design after design, not having much trouble with that, but finding a design that will go well with lots of bright colors is hard. :\ So she's very much still under construction. She's based on gummy candies.

This is Ariel, and she's one of my favorites (don't tell the others). Based on chocolate-covered strawberries.

This one is pretty solid. I like her design and colors as well. I'm probably not going to change her much. And yes, that purple is hair. :) She's inspired by cotton candy!

Now this one is my absolute favorites. She's basically awesome. Need to fix a few things first, but I do really like her. Oh, and jaw-breakers are her inspiration.

Thanks, all. :)

Mannequin...chick...thing?

So! A new post. Finally. Sorry 'bout that. Well, here is one of the projects I've been working all summer on: the basic body for my fashion show senior thesis project. Yep, getting a head-start.

I'm pretty happy with her basic form, so now I get to start throwing clothes on her! I was excited for this step, and after spending about 4 hours fiddling around with nCloth, I remembered why I...hated it. Well, hate is a strong word. Probably would help if I had some actual instruction on it (remember a few posts ago? Wia was my first attempt at making a shirt with nCloth) but oh, well, trial and error is fun.

After coming up with a basic sketch I'm ashamed to show anyone who expects to live afterwards, I decided that I really wish I could skip this step and go straight to the rigging, but alas, I know that to be the wrong order of things. :(

I'm also doing pretty well with the progress of the website - I put down generating a lot of content so I could concentrate on getting this model done, so now I really should turn my attention back for the remainder of the summer.

Hopefully more updates soon!

Blend Shapes final

So I had an independent study on how to animate the face via blend shapes and this was a resulting example of what I learned to do. I created around 40 different shapes, some of which are included in this example. These are just the stills, but I will soon post a link to the video including the transitioning between the different expressions so you can see how the face moves. :)

This was created in probably about 4 weeks, the bust in about 2 weeks, so 6 weeks total. Spring of 2010. Sorry the image is huge. Heh. Forgot to scale it down.

End of the year projects

Hello all!

It's been forever since I updated and I realized that I probably should. So, I thought I would let you know how all my finals went gradually over the next week or two, hopefully intermingled with some work that I'm doing over the summer. At the moment I'm starting on my senior thesis and building an actual gallery website (ugh - thanks so much to my sister for helping me, though).

So, to start with, here's the final I did for my rendering class - it turned out reasonably well, the only thing I'm very disappointed in is the ground texture. Pretty obvious I didn't do too much with it. :\

Here's a test Render for my chips. :)

Rendering Week 5

Here's the assignment I finished for this week Rendering class. It's rather silly. The assignment was to play around with paint effects and toon shading. So this is what I came up with! (Made teh skeleton in a previous quarter - just stuck it in for kicks). And, yes, everything but the stomach and skeleton are not at all medically accurate. :)

Rendering Project 2

Been a while since I posted, thought I would do some updating of what I've been working on.

I'm taking a rendering class so we have weekly assignments and I'll post the better outcomes. The one I post today was for specifically learning about procedural shading and final gathering. With the exception of the butter (some day I will correct it) I rather like the composition.

Spring Break WIP 1

Next quarter I'm going to be learning blend shapes as well as more about the hair dynamics in Maya, so, over break, I decided I would make the head model that I would use for both of those classes. I could count on one hand the number of times I've modeled heads, though this is the second time I've really modeled a high-res, highly detailed model. Still trying to learn a good way to do it. :) So, after a week of work (probably about 30 hours) here it is so far.

(I also have a complete model of the inside of the mouth - teeth, gums, and tongue. You won't be able to see those until I start animating, though. :) They're pretty sweet.)

"Final" Brain

Now all that is left is to get some final critiques on my brain (I'll probably hear that it isn't medically accurate enough and have to redo the texture mapping). This render is of the high-poly version and I was so fed-up with the project I didn't even bother to take a render of the low-poly version. Heh, probably not the best idea considering that's the model that matters. But it's okay because it looks the same as this one (used a displacement map, a normal map, then a color map). I'll eventually post a picture of that I expect.

Wia Render 1

Here's the first of a series of renders now that she's "complete."

nCloth developments.

So I decided to teach myself nCloth for this Wia project and this was some bug in the rendering that I did that actually looked kinda cool. I considered keeping it, but, you know.

Wia - Geometry Update

Completed the geometry and threw some basic textures on her. Now just to bind the skin and animate her.

Wia - "Finished" Rig

Not sure if I forgot anything for the rig, but as it is now, it's complete! Now I just have to bind, paint weights and then pose for my renders. :)

Older project

I haven't done much other than rigs on my most recent projects, so I thought I would post something I did last quarter just to keep myself in the habit of updating.

So this is it! The bones of the inner ear (the ossicles - incus, malleus, and the stapes) and the tympanic membrane. Very un-bone looking. Did these for my 3D Organic Forms class; it was fun. Took about a week.

Wia WIP 1

Another project I'm working on is a character for my character design class. She's supposed to be simple, and was based on a cloud. If and when I texture her, that correlation will be a lot more clear, but for now, she has fur effects! And nCloth! Those are nifty.

When I get the rig (argh) working, I'll post better pictures, but there's a little mugshot of her with her awesome hair. Not so hot on the face still, but I'm distancing myself from it before coming back to it to maybe put some final touches on it.

More later!

Brain WIP 1

Well, for my first update, I'll post a WIP of a brain that I'm creating. It's been a slow process, this project mostly on the back-burner. Overall assignment is to create a brain (in two hemispheres) that has a low- and a high-poly version.

Here's the geometry thus far:

Now for this assignment, best way for detail is a displacement map. You'll have to ignore the little cerebellum in the corner of this picture. I haven't bothered doing the UVs or texturing it yet so it looks kinda like it exploded. I've not worked with displacement maps before, so here's my progress so far in figuring out how to use them:

I'll update as I get more work done on it. :)

The Beginning

Hey all, this will eventually be a blog concerning mostly 3D and perhaps some 2D art, as well tutorials that I find or make, and perhaps links to other things generally 3D.

I'll try to update once a week with WIPs or sketches, or other nick-knacks of tasty information.

Thanks!
